When the Civic Eagle team and I started conceptualizing Eagle, we only had the idea of an app that allowed users to look up legislation, send messages to their elected representative, and debate "hot topics" on our platform.
This was my first ever attempt at product design. At the time, I didn't know how to even begin designing a mobile app, but I knew how to use Photoshop so I opened it up and started laying out rectangles, squares and thinking about colors and fonts.
At this point we had no real user research, only assumptions based on our own personal experiences. We were somewhat wrong to start in this way - since then I've learned to never base design off of assumptions - but we were excited to start somewhere and to be able to actually visualize our ideas.
